From what I know many of my friends listen to and appreciate American music. I have nothing against American music and I'm open to listening to it but I am more interested in music from the Pakistani and Indian cultures. It is a habit of mine and for some reason Paki/Indian music really touches my soul. Recently I listened to a song from a 1996 Bollywood (India's Hollywood) film. A few lyrics that touched me were as followed:
Todoge mera dil ; You'll break my heart,
Muhje barbard karoge ; You'll destroy me,
Na chain hume doge ; You won't give me peace,
Na dard ki zanjeer se azaad karoge; You won't free me from the chains of pain,
Dil phir bhi tumhe deinge ; Yet I'll still give you my heart,
Kya yaad karoge ; What will you remember.
The reason I chose this particular song is that I believe it really expresses love. Love is a wonderful emotion and I think it is beautifully expressed through music. In fact that is what attracts me to Pakistani and Indian music. The main objective of song composers is love. A song about love is always peacefull to listen to, especially when it touches the soul.
I decided to give everyone a different cultural aspect of music to see what most people would think. Being a Pakistani I would love to spread my culture especially if it is music since music is a cultural aspect in our everyday lives.

Wow! This is such a beautiful song! I love how music could connect cultures. I love songs with meaning and this one definitely has meaning. Many people could relate to this I am sure of. I would love to hear about more songs from your culture.

ReplyDeleteWhen I read the song lyrics they spoke to me they same way they spoke to you. Thoses words are really powerful because they represent the true meaning of love. People think love is being committed to someone that is perfect, but to me that is not love at all. Love to me is being able to go through a hard time in your life with someone you feel passionate about. I have listened to Indian music before and even though I don't understand it, but I like it. I think that it is awesome that you are so attached to your culture, and listening to music from your culture will make you closer to your culture.
ReplyDeleteExactly Stephanie. Love isn't just about commitment it's about going through pain with your loved one, sometimes pain that your loved on gave you. I'm glad to know you also like Indian/Paki music. And about being attached to culture, I feel proud that I am still attached to my culture even though I was born and raised in a different country.

Its funny you bring this up because i was recently listining to some arabian music and i was fortunate enough to have it translated. when it was translated the lyrics were beautiful. The song spoke out to me like one of shakespears sonnets. The song you picked just proves my point of how pritty it sounds.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, the song is very beautiful and does express love. Even though I don't know much about Pakistani music, I would love to hear more. American music is not always about love, but is sometimes about vulgar topics. I may not be able to understand what the singer is saying, but I'd love to listen to this song.

I completely agree with your statement because I find Indian and Pakistani cultures completely enticing. However I want you to know that Indian/Pakistani cultures are more known and appreciated then you think. The Soviet Union was completely in love with Bollywood, and many post Soviet Union countries still are. My parents love Bollywood, with our favorite family movie being "Zita and Gita". Also, I recently saw a movie named "Jodhaa Akbar", with my favorite Bollywood actress Aashwarya Rai. The movie was culturally enriching because it told a story about the clashes of Indian cultures. I found out today that the movie won the title of "Best Foreign Film".

ReplyDeleteNicole, I'm glad you found the song interesting. I'm not all that into American music for some reason but I agree when you say that sometimes it is on vulgar topics. I apologize for not placing the Title/Artist of the song earlier. The song's name is Kya Yaad Karoge from a 1996 film Khilona. It was song by two very famouse Indian singer Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu. If you type in the movie and song name on youtube you will find it. If not I would be more than happy to provide the link.
Jamilia, I agree when you say that Pakistani/Indian cultures are more known especially after meeting you. I was a bit insecure about posting this as I felt what would people think but after recieving such positive feedback I'm glad I did. I know how much you know about Bollywood which makes it interesting to speak about it with you. I haven't seen much old films but I did happen to watch Jodha Akbaar and I found the love story fascinating. And your comment about the lyrics seeming cliche then that might be in your case since you might have heard such songs before but based on all the romantic songs I've heard this one spoke out to me and touched my heart and I think we all know how it feels when something just speaks out to you. I appreciate your comment and feedback.
